Abstract
Archaeology Ireland news
4 - 6
Discusses the appointment of a manager for the Céide Neolithic Fields visitor centre; an interim Board for the National Museum; the 1995 European Bronze Age celebration; the National Monuments (Amendment) Bill 1993; an eighteenth-century carvel boat from Loch Neagh (see also 97/1865 etc); the Third International Conference on Insular Art; legal liabilities of landowners of ancient monuments.
Prophets and Evangelists (speaking from stone)
Heather King
9 - 10
Discusses the interpretation of two panels from the West Cross (or `Cross of the Scriptures') from Clonmacnoise (Co Offaly). Comparison with a thirteenth-century window from Chartres Cathedral in France suggests that the figures represent an Evangelist being supported by an Old Testament Prophet.
Hoards of the later prehistoric period
Finola O'Carroll
11 - 13
A general discussion of the phenomenon of LBA hoards in Ireland, considering their contexts and interpretation.
Omey and the sands of time
Tadhg O'Keefe
14 - 17
Reports on excavation of a deeply-stratified site on an eroding sand-cliff. An Early Medieval enclosure was associated with over 259 Christian and pagan burials, some of which were covered by stone structures. Prehistoric levels provided evidence of Bronze Age settlement.
From cauldrons to crotals
E P Kelly
18 - 21
Describes the content of the National Museum's Prehistoric Ireland exhibition.
The barracks of Ballinskelligs Bay
Daphne Pochin Mould
22 - 24
Describes the Napoleonic signal stations and other installations of the south-west coast of Ireland.
New road ahead for Iron Age trackway
Christina Haywood
25 - 27
Reports on the conservation of the timbers recovered from part of the trackway from Corlea Bog, Co Longford.
Local attraction -- not the audiovisual!
Frank Donaldson
28 - 29
Highlights various aspects of Irish heritage attraction development and management of relevance to local communities.
New hillfort date gives clue to the Bronze Age
Eoin Grogan
Tom Condit
A sample taken from the base of the rampart during excavations at Mooghaun South hillfort produced a radiocarbon date of 255~~BC--917~~BC. This provides further evidence that Irish hillforts are generally of LBA date.
Mesolithic milestones
John Feehan
Discusses a series of naturally-eroded mushroom-shaped boulders that indicate the location of Mesolithic lake shorelines. Georadar and GIS techniques are now being used to study postglacial shorelines.
