Abstract
Tintagel
Christopher D Morris
84 - 88
Reviews the work that has taken place at Tintagel since the 1930s. Recent work has produced evidence for late Roman activity. A sixth-century inscribed stone has also been found, it commemorates Artognou `father of a descendent of Coll'.
John Musty's science diary
John Musty
89 - 91
Reviews the magnetic survey results from Stanton Drew; a cranium from Eritrea which shows the features of both Homo sapiens and Homo erectus; volcanic eruptions and global weather; provenance of an Etruscan pottery vessel; Roman dentures; a small dog of Roman date; redating of the Medbourne donkey; ancient frankincense; developments in the manufacture of steel in the post--medieval period; dental anthropology; a new MSc in archaeological science; Noah's ark; the impact of extra--terrestrial bodies.
Brackmills, Northampton. An Early Iron Age torc
Andy Chapman
92 - 95
Fieldwalking in advance of a pipeline project revealed two small enclosures, a single roundhouse ring ditch and numerous shallow pits and postholes. A bound human skeleton was found with a torc around its neck. Part of an early Christian cemetery of twenty-three inhumations was also found. A distinctive deformation of wrist bones was found on both the Iron Age and one of the medieval skeletons. This is take to suggest a continuity of the population for over a millennium.
Birdlip Quarry and other sites. Or how we 'dualled' the Ermin Street
Andrew Mudd
96 - 101
A range of Iron Age `style' buildings found in Roman contexts are described. The work was undertaken as part of a DBFO (Design, Build, Finance & Operate) scheme, the success of which is also reviewed.
Carrickfergus Castle
Colm J Donnelly
Paul McCooey
Tom E McNeil
101 - 102
The way in which Carrickfergus Castle, said to be Northern Ireland's most impressive medieval monument, was built is reviewed. Excavation has challenged some of the original ideas and revealed important details on the initial Anglo-Norman building programme.
Underground Shrewsbury
Nigel Baker
108 - 114
Shrewsbury lacks a medieval cathedral, but has five Saxon minster churches and around two hundred pre-Georgian buildings. The results of a recent archaeological survey are discussed.

The merger of English Heritage and RCHME; the problem of storing archaeological archives; problems with the accounting practice some archaeological charities have adopted following a new formula given by the Charity Commission.
