Abstract
Wood Hall
Vivienne Metcalf-Dickinson
S Tomson
364 - 372
Thorough excavation of a moated site in Yorkshire has identified a number of phases of development which can be linked with known changes in the ownership of the site. The remains of substantial stone buildings have been uncovered, these date from the twelfth century through to the seventeenth. Considerable quantities of glassware, pottery and decorated plaster were found during the excavations.
Wigmore Castle
373 - 375
English Heritage has spent £1 million on this Herefordshire site. Instead of clearing and excavating the site it was consolidated so it can be presented as a ruin, rather than as a traditional site.
Diary
376 - 378
The work and earnings of UK and USA archaeologists; the Current Archaeology/Royal Archaeological Institute Extra-Mural Essay prize results; the Roman invasion of AD 43.
Catterick
Pete R Wilson
379 - 386
Summary report bringing together a number of excavations on Roman sites in Catterick. The sites include a fort, a mansio, an annona (or official granary) and a bath house. Later Anglian occupation and the possibility that Catterick was the Catraeth of The Gododdin is also considered.
Islay and Colonsay: Mesolithic Hunter-Gatherers in the Hebrides
Steven J Mithen
390 - 394
A diverse range of sites have been found to indicate Mesolithic occupation of this area. These include shell middens and sites characterised by large numbers of microliths. Other work has concentrated on reconstructing the environment and on mapping sea level change. At Bolonsay a Neolithic site was also found.
Picts
Derek Alexander
395 - 397
The discovery and excavation of a Pictish cemetery. Barrows were found and were usually square in shape. Most of the skeletons recovered were female and it is suggested that this confirms that succession in Pictish communities was through the female line.
