An account of activities conducted from the University of Edinburgh's field research centre on the Isle of Lewis. Following the construction of a visitor centre a programme of survey and excavation was undertaken. An Iron Age defensive site, known as a broch, has been excavated at Loch na Berie and an island dun - another defensive structure on an island in a loch approached by a causeway - at Loch Varavat. A wheelhouse - or undefended, partly underground settlement - was also excavated at Cnip.

Described as one of the more controversial excavations in the Western Isles a road straightening project revealed a hitherto unknown kerb cairn. This lies a mile away from the standing stones, but is aligned straight down the main avenue of them.
