Abstract
Tripontium
4 - 10
Excavation of a mansio and bath house complex situated on Watling Street, near Rugby. The size of the bath house suggested a small town, and recent archaeological excavation seems to have confirmed this. Amongst the finds were inscribed stones and tiles.
The Herefordshire field-name survey
11 - 15
In the 1830s tithes were replaced by a rent charge. In order to calculate the value of this, tithe maps were drawn up and the names of all fields recorded. These maps provide a major resource for the archaeologist and local historian.
Limekilns in Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent
Ingram Cleasby
16 - 20
Results of a survey of limekilns in three parishes in the Yorkshire Dales. The project aimed to locate, describe and record all surviving kilns as a prelude to selecting those worthy of protection and conservation. A description of the practice and extent of lime burning in the area is also included.
James Pickering, AFC, FSA
21 - 25
A biography of this aerial archaeologist, together with notes on some of his discoveries: the Hoe Hills boundary, cemetery, and enclosures; the Roman fort of Pennocrucium; linear earthworks in east Leicestershire; Sleaford Iron Age settlement and possible cemetery; and a Lincolnshire `villa'.
Diary
26 - 28
Notes on the founding of the Association for Roman Archaeology; the effectiveness of PPG 16 within London; road developments within the vicinity of Stonehenge; the publication of the report of the excavations at Stonehenge directed by Stuart Piggott and Richard Atkinson in the 1950s and '60s; and a museum devoted to the Bronze Age sites in the vicinity of Kilmartin.
Science Diary
John Musty
29 - 31
Items include the long term preservation of human remains; post-medieval sheep fleece; the evidence for mercury use and poisoning; guidelines for geophysical prospection; guidelines for archaeometallurgical studies; a computer-assisted reconstruction of the skull of a Neanderthal child; Ice Age weather conditions; the collapse of the Mayan civilisation; and DNA analysis of the parchment upon which the Dead Sea scrolls were written.
Flood plain archaeology: the excavation of Hemington Fields
Chris R Salisbury
34 - 37
Continual fluvial reworking of the early Holocene gravels of the River Trent has provided evidence for many wooden structures which once stood upon or near it. These include the three medieval bridges, a mill dam and race, numerous fishweirs, a cargo of quernstones, part of a Mercian cross shaft and other Saxon and Roman stonework, and the recent discovery of a fourth medieval bridge.
