Unenclosed platform settlements
Tam Ward

Unenclosed platform settlements are the earliest known habitation sites in Clydesdale, where forty-nine sites are known with over 270 platforms. Adjacent clearance cairns survive where the land is unimproved and some sites also have lynchets. Several settlements have been excavated recently along the M74 and identification of new sites has narrowed the gap between the groupings in the Clyde and Tweed valleys. Other types of hut sites may be broadly contemporary, also predating the defended enclosures of the later first millennium BC.
