Abstract: |
The editor lists and discusses Britain's World Heritage sites, of which there are now 14. Jennifer A Page presents the 'English Heritage Mission Statement' (the nature and concept of its future business, and its supporting aims). Oliver Pearcey & Peter White consider successes and losses relative to pumping stations of historic value in 'The water heritage: is privatisation a threat or an opportunity?'. G Wainwright presents the figures for rescue archaeology funding 1989/90 while Peter de Lange details the grants for historic buildings and areas, for London, and for ancient monuments. There is a review of conservation studies for Hereford, Leamington Spa, and two cathedrals (Wells and Chester). Geophysical prospecting results are presented for EIA/RB Stanwick (Northants) and Groundwell Farm Swindon (Iron Age enclosure). Geoff Noble describes barns and walls in the Yorkshire dales, where urban conservation instruments are being tried in a rural area (Swaledale). Also various news items. |
