Abstract: |
The short articles include one on the problems of excavating in towns where archaeological remains cannot always be accurately predicted (cf Rose Theatre); one on disturbing trends in the overturning of statutory protection for buildings (eg Kings Cross Bill; Number One Poultry site in London); and one on problems and solutions for Victorian churches in London. A shortened version of English Heritage's Corporate Plan gives the priorities and financial picture for the period 1989-93. The arrangements for preserving the Rose Theatre remains while building continues overhead are outlined, and there is further discussion of the Number One Poultry affair as a test case for historic building preservation. Shorter pieces deal with 1989 prosecutions related to ancient monuments, grants to buildings at risk, and proposed changes in the Ecclesiastical Exemption. |
