Short report on archaeological works carried out at Stoney Littleton long barrow as part of a wider programme of repair and conservation following deterioration to the internal gallery and chambers; a number of antiquarian and more recent investigations of the long barrow had previously taken place. The works included the excavation of three trenches, geophysical and auger surveys, a watching brief during conservation works and the recording of several internal elevations. The works provided some further evidence as to the structural make-up of the mound, including indications of a possible pit row extending eastwards from the eastern corner of the barrow. Report on an archaeological survey of Larkbarrow Farm, to the northwest of Exford in Exmoor National Park, undertaken in 2000--1. The farm buildings are now ruined, and much of the land comprises rough grassland and heather moor. The archaeological evidence demonstrates human activity dating back over 6000 years, with a range of field monuments dating from the Late Neolithic period and Early Bronze Age, although the apparent disappearance of Lark Barrow during the later-nineteenth century indicates the fragile nature of these monuments. A wide range of features relating to nineteenth-century improvements indicated developing farming methods employed on the moor in this period. The importance of water management is illustrated by an extensive gutter system on the slopes of Long Combe. The survey brought together a range of evidence combining ground survey, aerial photography and documentary sources to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of this upland landscape.

A watching brief and limited excavation of service trenches was carried out at a site north of Church Street, Milborne Port, during construction work in 2000. The development partially revealed a small number of discrete features including postholes, ditches, quarry pits and a small section of unmortared wall, mostly dating to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. After the find of a layer of stones with medieval pottery in 1981 at Bickley, Cleve, an area of trenches was excavated to determine the nature of the discovery. This revealed part of a small, mainly twelfth-century settlement. Two successive buildings, probably with walls of clay, timber, and wattle, were defined. The later building had the remains of an oven and ?hearth within and was probably a dwelling. The earlier may have been a stable or store. The occupation ceased at the steep slope to the south of the buildings but to the north there was evidence for cultivation possibly dating back to the tenth century. The evidence of large numbers of hones points to agricultural/woodland occupations for the inhabitants. Large amounts of pottery were recovered, enabling the site to be relatively closely dated, while the few metal objects included two copper alloy buckles and a unique iron stirrup. Study, based on a collection of manuscript documents relating to the manor of Ston Easton dating back to the end of the thirteenth century, of the enclosures carried out in the area during the Tudor period for the control of livestock.
