Excavations in this small settlement defined four main phases: 1) Late Saxon to 14th century features including a lime-burning pit; 2) 14th century cemetery, temporary annexe to St Mary's churchyard; 3), late medieval reversion to tenements, into late 17th century; 4) continuing street-front tenements, domestic and commercial, into modern times. Specialist reports on medieval and post medieval pottery, skeletons, animal bones.

Most of the 300+ crucks in Somerset are jointed, with wider-span roofs having either extended crucks (seven examples) and base crucks (ten). Terminology is briefly discussed. The Abbey barn has a roof of eight raised base-crucks carrying a superstructure of upper crucks, a feature peculiar to S W England. The building is re-dated to the late 14th century. The roof of St John's Priory is one of the best-preserved base-cruck roofs in the county, a most unusual feature being the early Arabic numerals used in addition to Roman ones for carpenters' marks. ST 392518 etc. Hearth and kiln furniture together with fragments of crude vessels were found in a drain exposure along with quantities of Durotrigian wares of 1st century BC and 1st-2nd century AD. The salt-making site was probably on the edge of estuarine flats, and gave no evidence of the RB marine transgression that has been postulated for this region.
