Abstract
An ancient Irish bridge
Seán Duke
31 - 32
Remains of the vertical posts of an oak bridge discovered in situ in the bed of the River Shannon close to the Early Christian monastery of Clonmacnoise were dendrochronologically dated to the late-eighth/early-ninth century AD. Subsequent radiocarbon dating of the timber supported the dendrochronological analysis. The bridge links the eastern and western stretches of the Sleigh Mor, an ancient routeway that connected Leinster and Connaught across the once extensive bog and woodland landscape of the Irish midlands. The oldest known wooden bridge in Ireland, it is now challenging archaeologists to reinterpret the importance of Clonmacnoise and the nature of early Irish society.
