The paper explores the combination of Thiessen polygons and viewshed analysis for the generation of hypothetical prehistoric territories for a group of Iron Age hillforts in Spain, and asks whether the combined results suggest a ranking of hillforts in a stratified regional system, or whether their territories are consistent with a peer-polity system.

The paper presents an empirical study with the aim of demonstrating how software choice in terms of different GIS packages affects generated viewsheds. It is argued that calculation of viewsheds on a variety of terrain types with three standard GIS packages suggests that the discrepancy is greatest where the slope is changing, such as a ridgelines and the edges of depressions in the landscape. A simple measure of elevation range was tested and found to be insufficient to account for all variation but that certain GIS packages seem to be more sensitive than others to terrain severity when it comes to calculating viewsheds.
