This paper assesses Wiltshire beakers in the light both of the author's recently published national classification and of recent fieldwork and excavation. Some inter-regional reaction is seen and developments in the Stonehenge and Avebury regions are related to intake of land. Well known monuments deployed in the argument include Amesbury barrow 51 and the West Kennet long barrow. Reference is made to round barrows by Grinsell's numbers (Grinsell 1957) and to long barrows by name. Calendrical chronology (BC) is used throughout, but individual radiocarbon determinations are quoted conventionally as bp.

In winter of 1989/90 Wessex Archaeology undertook a continuous watching brief during the construction of a new 700mm water main. This report contains details of four sites which were recorded within Wiltshire during pipe-laying operations. The sites comprise: `The Monkton Deverill Anglo-Saxon cemetery' by M Rawlings & D Hurl (26-36) including notes on `Human bones' by V Jenkins (33-5); a section through a Roman road also at Monkton Deverill; a group of early prehistoric pits on Summerslade Down wherein were found `Pottery', here noted by L N Mepham (39), `Flint' by Frances Healy (39-40), `Plant remains' by Pat Hinton (40 & 41), and `Charcoal' by Rowena Gale (40); and the Pen Pits close to Zeals. There is an `Appendix: A gazetteer of sites noted on the Wiltshire section of the Codford-Ilchester pipeline' (46-8).
