Abstract: |
Extensive excavations beneath floor of the nave, choir, crypt, and session room revealed in situ elements of two twelfth century predecessors of the present thirteenth century cathedral. In the lower church, nineteenth century burials were encountered but there was no trace of St Mungo's tomb. Burials in the Nave dated from before the twelfth century up to the nineteenth. The structures are described, followed by summary reports on the architectural stone fragments, bronze mortars with iron pestle, pottery, small finds, coffins and coffin fittings, various samples, and human remains. The final section comprises a research design for post-excavation and publication. `Appendix 1' (28--31) lists the finds, `Appendix 2' (32--3) catalogues the burials, and `Appendix 3' (34) lists the soil, wood (14C), and mortar samples. |
