Abstract: |
Reports the results of investigations at two adjacent sites in advance of the construction of facilities for visitors to the King's Caves (see also 94/1185). Five per cent of the area was fieldwalked, along forestry plough furrows: flint and pitchstone objects were recovered and features observed in the vicinity of the proposed car park. Engineer's test pits were then excavated. Although the visitor centre site is close to a known hut circle, few finds were discovered there. The car park area produced significant archaeological deposits and stone tools, and full excavation is recommended. It is also observed that valuable deposits survived, despite severe damage by deep ploughing during tree-planting. |
