Amphorae in Britain and the western Empire

Collection of papers presented at a meeting on Roman amphorae held at the Museum of London on 23rd and 24th January 1994, previously unpublished in Britain, plus two other papers on the same subject, including

the types of amphorae found in Iron Age Britain are summarised, along with their origins and the commodities they are thought to have contained. Problems of identification and quantification are discussed, as are the contexts in which they are found and the interpretations given to their presence

the production of amphorae in northern Gaul is examined, along with evidence of their export to Britain and the possibility that they indicate the presence of vineyards in the Seine basin and Burgundy in Roman times

discussion of recent evidence for the production of amphorae in Roman Britain, in particular in Verulamium and probably in London

survey of the presence of Dressel 23 amphorae in Britain, particularly in Winchester, and their association with the Spanish olive oil trade during the late Roman period

discussion of the Haltern 70 type of amphora and associated types, including its date, epigraphy, probable contents and distribution, and recent evidence of variations in its form

an examination of the 'Richborough 527' type of amphora, their distribution and their probable production centre in the Lipari region of the Aeolian islands

results of a petrographic analysis of twenty samples

description of three vessels, two representing the Peacock and Williams Class 40/Benghazi Middle Roman 1 type and one from the Peacock and Williams Class 44/British Bii type, of unconfirmed provenance but possibly from London

Collates information on recent finds and their implications for the distribution of Lyon ware in Britain and Wales, and also for its frequency in early Roman assemblages. Four trends are identified: the probability that imports continued into the Flavian period; the trend towards beakers in preference to cups towards the end of the importing period; the close association of its distribution with the deployment of the Roman army; and its rarity, despite an extensive distribution.
