The Roman pottery kilns at Rossington Bridge: excavations 1956-1961.

Report of the excavation of two sites alongside a Roman road (Rossington Bridge Pumping Station and Rossington Bridge Farm) of eight kilns and material from waster heaps, mostly dating to the mid-second century AD with some earlier and later material. Slight evidence of domestic occupation and a boundary ditch were also found. The status of the potters is discussed in the light of evidence from the excavation. Includes unauthored specialist reports on objects of stone (over thirty items, mostly fragments of querns but also including a re-used fragment of a Neolithic polished axe); glass vessels (five rim and base fragments); a lozenge-shaped object of fired clay; black burnished ware production at Rossington Bridge; the human bone (twelve undated fragments, probably from one individual, including a left humerus which has been shaped at one end); the plant remains; and the pottery excavated at the Rossington Bridge Farm site.
