Abstract
A Roman hoard from Whitwell
Roger Bland
Catherine Johns
151 - 157
At time of writing, two gold solidi and 870 silver siliquae of approximate late fourth century date, had been recovered (there is a note appended reporting that further discoveries had been reported once this article had gone to press). In addition a gold ring dating to the last quarter or the fourth century, and combining two known styles of marriage or betrothal ring, and assorted stray finds are also reported.
The parks of Rutland past and present
Leonard M Cantor
158 - 161
An overview of Rutland parks, beginning with the ten deer parks created between the mid twelfth and mid fourteenth centuries, and larger parks such as Greetham in existence by 1446. Early cartographic records for sixteenth and seventeenth century instances are followed by later more formal landscaped parks, succeeded by more `naturalised' parkland in the mid-eighteenth century and finally municipal, country and farm parks bringing the whole up to the present time.
A find of 13th century silver coins from Oakham, 1990
T H McK Clough
162 - 166
Reports the discovery via metal detector, of twenty-eight coins, mostly Long Cross pennies and cut half pennies dating from the reign of Henry III (1216--72), which was not declared Treasure Trove on the basis that they appear to have been the contents of a small purse that was simply lost. There was also a Henry V penny, not thought to be part of the hoard.
Martinsthorpe
Sheila Sleath
Robert Ovens
167 - 174
An attempt to consolidate mostly unpublished information concerning activity at this site, from the DMV, early seventeenth-century Martinsthorpe House demolished in 1755, Martinsthorpe or St Martin's Chapel which continued in at least annual use until 1950, and Old Hall Farm converted from existing stables in 1755. There are details of known inhabitants.
