The use of laser scanners for recording and reproducing sculpture

Outlines the principles of the technique for recording three-dimensional objects. A scanning facility of this type has been established at the National Maritime Museum in Liverpool and the system is intended for use in museum documentation, conservation, packaging and storage, sculpture replication (by computer-guided lathe), and electronic publishing. A portable device, suitable for use on archaeological sites, is under development.
