TL 143067 etc. Describes excavations within the Saxon burh of Kingsbury, the precincts of the Abbey, the medieval town, and at Redbourn. Pottery sequences and other artefacts, some associated with structural remains, will be useful but do not yet elucidate the origins of the town. Artefacts range from prehistoric to post-medieval in date.

Reports a survey of pre-1803 houses, with a catalogue of forty houses, brief descriptions of the timber-framed ones, a structural typology, and study of related documentary evidence. Selected plans, isometric and sectional views are given. The area is a meeting place of Essex and Midlands traditions, and some clear hybrids are seen. Plans also show variety, with two- and three-part halls etc.

TL 146069. A clay tobacco pipe kiln, dated to early 18th century by analysis of bore diameters, was excavated and related to documentary evidence.

Analysis of pollen stratified earlier than the establishment of the Roman fort at AD 43/4 indicates extensive clearance and intensive farming which, together with the evidence of settlement, cemetery, and mint debris, suggests a need for radical reinterpretation of the 'Belgic' occupation.
