Considers the professional divisions which have recently appeared within archaeology, beginning with a summary of the changes which have occurred during the last twenty-five years. The effects of the introduction of PPG 16 and environmental impact legislation are seen as the impetus for a shake-up of the trust/unit system and the creation of a new class of archaeological consultants. The article concludes with a brief critical discussion of these changes.
