Uses the Domesday Book as a source of information about woodland in the county during the late-eleventh century.

Revaluates the impact on archaeology of Hawkes' book which was first published in 1951.

A series of evaluations, excavations and watching briefs identified: an isolated pit containing Late Neolithic grooved ware; a small Middle Bronze Age cremation cemetery; and an extensive Middle to Late Iron Age settlement. Includes separately authored reports on:

which reports 722 pieces of worked flint and chert, with the provenance of the dominant proportion (99%) of the assemblage being from local valley gravels

Reports the excavation of a well-furnished `Durotrigian' inhumation burial identified as a woman aged between c. 26--45 years. Finds including a finely decorated Iron Age mirror, some brooches, a toilet set and part of a Roman strainer set, suggest that the burial was interred shortly after the Roman conquest. Reports on the progress of the excavation of a substantial Roman building. The building originally had a hypocaust, limestone roof-tiles, clay ridge tiles, window glass, tufa voussoirs from vaulted ceilings, and mosaic floors (indicated by the numerous tesserae found). Dated deposits were of the late-third and fourth centuries AD, but none were associated with the construction levels. See also 2002/918.
