Abstract
Trade and market origins in the 9th century: an archaeological perspective of Anglo-Carolingian relations
Richard Hodges
213 - 233
Discusses the archaeological evidence in terms of a model of prestige goods being exchanged between the Carolingian kingdoms and the territories to N and W, and the probable effects on Charles the Bald's kingdom of the collapse of this system. The second part proposes a model (based on slight but testable evidence) of the means by which these communities moved towards a system based on competitive markets. The 9th century is seen as a watershed in this respect.
