Abstract
The origins of medieval nucleated rural settlements in Glamorgan: a conjectural model
Jonathan A K Kissock
31 - 49
The claim that villages were an Anglo-Norman introduction into south Wales is challenged. It is argued that many villages have their origins in the pre-Conquest period and are the result of changes to the farming system brought about by the development of clas monasticism. The paper also reviews recent work on multiple estates, the factors governing the productivity of labour and open field origins.
