Abstract
Leafing through the past
Frances Griffith
6 - 7
Highlights the potential threat of afforestation to archaeological sites. Recent positive moves by the Forestry Commission, such as the appointment of archaeological consultants and its explicit commitment to conservation management of the nations forests, are applauded. Conversely, recent Government proposals to privatise the forests, and the Countryside Commission's woodland planting initiative, are retrograde steps.

Reports that a flint extraction site is being investigated in the Den of Boddam, Grampian (see also 94/304). A typical extraction pit is described and the extent of the site noted.

Underfloor eating
Angus Wainwright
Eighty bags of assorted builders' waste were retrieved from beneath floorboards during renovation work on the eighteenth-century house. Sieving and sorting of this material yielded a collection of woodworking waste, polishing cloths, broken tools, nails, painted plaster, and food remains; from this evidence it was possible to study various eighteenth-century work practices.
Iron Age farming in the Cotswolds
Alistair J Marshall
Summarises the results of continuing fieldwork on two small Iron Age settlement sites near Guiting Power, Gloucestershire.
Bridging the gap
Vivienne Metcalf-Dickinson
A mid-fifteenth-century gatehouse and four phases of timber bridge have been discovered during the excavation of the site near Knottingley, North Yorkshire. The bridge was replaced by a causeway in c 1680. Pre-moat structures have also been found, including a bow-sided building of Late Saxon type but associated with twelfth-century pottery. Post-medieval farm buildings and a late medieval garden are being studied at the south of the site.
Can BM afford Hoxne treasure?
Judith Plouviez
A summary of the proceedings of the September 1993 inquest, at which the hoard, comprising coins, gold jewellery, and silver tableware, was declared Treasure Trove. It is reported that the British Museum may have difficulty in raising the finder's reward once the hoard has been valued by the Treasure Trove Reviewing Committee.
Digging up the back yard
Richard G Annis
Briefly describes the remains of the deserted medieval village of Elton, Cleveland, and reports that one of the farmsteads has been excavated, revealing traces of a stone building.
Standing the test of time
Roland Smith
Buildings and enclosures of a Romano-British settlement have been excavated at Nursling and an interesting assemblage of pottery has been retrieved.
Constructing Caerwent
Richard J Brewer
Continuing excavations of the Roman forum-basilica have provided evidence of the form of the building. Recent work has concentrated on the construction levels which have yielded five coins, architectural fragments and evidence of the cranes and lifting devices employed by the builders.
Government rethink on historic buildings
Richard Morris
A critical assessment of the draft version of PPG 15: Historic Buildings and Conservation Areas which was issued for consultation in July 1993. Many strong points in the document are let down, for example because it is inconsistent with PPG 16 (which covers below-ground remains), or by its over-emphasis of economic benefits of conservation.
