Abstract
Abbey Farm cottage, Thetford
Stephen Heywood
10 - 17
Standing within the precinct of the Cluniac priory this typical nineteenth century brick farmhouse retains a medieval flint and ashlar buttress, and in fact contains a medieval timber framed aisled barn. Successive construction phases and architectural features are described in detail.
A mediaeval bell-pit at the Priory of Our Lady, Thetford
Kenneth Penn
17 - 18
Excavations in the outer court of the Cluniac priory uncovered a circular, funnel-shaped pit with a hard fired clay lining and an irregular pit whose contents included bronze waste, burnt limestone blocks and fired clay pieces, some with bronze waste on their surfaces. These remains are indicative of bell-making by the lost-wax process, and were dated to the twelfth century by jug fragments also found in the second pit. The bell-making process is described.
