The paper introduces a programme of analysis of quartz chipped stone technology in Irish prehistory; the project, which is primarily based upon a recently excavated Mesolithic and Neolithic quartz assemblage, aims to provide a general overview of the extent of quartz use in Ireland, to develop analytical frameworks for this material through experimental knapping and to test these frameworks through selected case studies. The aim is to enable the archaeological community to have a readily accessible, common set of general principles and analytical tools to facilitate and enhance research agendas involving quartz.

This paper describes a new methodology for looking at one aspect of large cutting tools/handaxes, their tips. It describes the application of the methodology at four British Lower Palaeolithic assemblages and concludes that tips may not have been a primary concern of the knapper in the initial making of the handaxe.

The article describes a small and controversial group of flint artefacts, the striking feature of which is their unusual form, comprising three pointed arms or branches, coupled with neat flaking and indications that special care must have been taken in their manufacture. It is demonstrated that while there are some difficulties in replicating the form, no special techniques are required, and that their manufacture would have been within the compass of an individual used to knapping other types of tool. While the available data is catalogued and discussed, it is acknowledged that the controversy concerning the date and authenticity of these artefacts remains.
