Abstract
The Lithic Studies Society; A Personal View
Michael W Pitts
5 - 6
Describes the formation of the Lithic Studies Society, following the formation and disbanding of an earlier Lithic Studies Group in the late 1970s. The purpose, interests and scope of the new society are explained in the context of the development of international work on stone industries. LD
Drawing Flaked Stone Artefacts
Hazel Martingell
8 - 10
Technical article summarising a 1979 seminar on the illustration of lithic artefacts. Includes details of conventions, materials required and methodology. LD
Conventions
Stephen H R Aldhouse-Green
Elizabeth Healey
11 - 12
Summarises the conventions for illustration that are in common use by lithic analysts, including symbols representing features of stone tools, orientation and views of specific artefact types, scales, and the positioning of sections and profiles. LD
A Re-evaluation of the Approach to Lithic Studies in Britain Today.
12 - 13
Report on a 1979 seminar given by Caroline Wickham-Jones and Rosemary Hope, which highlighted the lack of methodology shown by British lithic analysts. Their main criticism is of the 'morpho-taxonomic' approach and the fact that so-called cultural types are isolated. The work of R Bonnichsen is examined at some length in their paper. This advocates a method of analysis based on systems of attributes. LD
Methods of Flint Measurement; A Summary of the Status Quo
Gillian Wilson
14 - 15
Short item summarising the recording methodologies and definitions for flint artefacts that currently appear in the literature. These differ in some areas, which is a source of confusion. LD
On the Measurement of Struck Flakes and Flake Tools
Alan Saville
15 - 20
Article explaining the measurement methods currently used by the author in his own studies of post-glacial lithic assemblages, following the recent drawing of attention in the literature to some of the inadequacies of current metrical approaches. LD
Not so much how, but more why?
Michael W Pitts
20 - 21
Discusses the analysis of lithic artefacts and the nature of research, questioning the value of the historical emphasis on establishing the date of assemblages; those approaching the author for advice have never asked a question that started, 'Why?' There are nonetheless sound reasons for taking linear measurements, and standard ways of doing this should be agreed upon. Also discusses the value of classification, arguing that there can be no such thing as an absolute typology. LD
