Documents archaeological work conducted at Leigh Barton since 1983, including excavations, recording and analysis of standing buildings, tree-ring dating of structural timbers, further documentary research, and restoration of the standing structures. The property was held by the Leigh family from at least c.1300 until the late-sixteenth century. A discussion of the standing buildings and architecture questions the monastic character of the courtyard buildings and instead links the farmstead closely with a group of local, late medieval farmhouses and manor houses with similar lodgings/service ranges and/or courtyard plans. Reports archaeological recording during the construction of a soakaway for public toilets. Two sides of an enclosure with a stone-revetted rampart were observed, and Romano-British material of second--fourth century AD date was recovered, as well as a range of palaeoenvironmental material. Reports an archaeological survey of the Iron Age hillfort and its immediate environs, which was designed to enhance the archaeological record of the site and to provide a statement on the erosion caused by the growing numbers of visitors and on the extent of the vegetation. A number of new interpretations about both the form and development of the hillfort have emerged as a result of the survey.
