Abstract: |
The headland protecting the lower estuary of the Plym, although now heavily built over, has yielded many artefacts of great interest during the last century and a half; small excavations, mounted to provide a context for those finds, supported the view of Mount Batten as an international port for much of the period from about 900 to 100 BC. Metalwork study and analysis identified Ewart Park and Llynfawr phases (roughly Ha B2/3 and Ha C) and a continuous metal supply including French imports. Ingots, craft tools, and ornaments were present, the quality and quantity suggesting high status; the animal bone assemblage has some unusual features which could support that view. Celtic coins and pottery indicate use of the site c 100 BC-AD 50, and fine grave goods come from the Stamford Hill Iron Age cemetery nearby. Roman pottery and coins go up to 4th century. |
