Considers the paper in the light of recent fieldwork.

After discovery of the existence of a water meadow at Melbury Abbas (see 97/1673), further examination of the river, both up- and downstream, revealed other water meadow systems whose nineteenth-century date was confirmed by documentary research.

Observations of roadworks in 1978 revealed part of the mound and multiple ditches that were probably components of the western of two round barrows known from topographical and antiquarian records. No burials were observed. The barrow is identified as the site of a Wessex Culture burial found in the last century, and the site is discussed in the context of contemporary monuments in the area. `The flint', including an arrowhead, is described by P J Woodward (49--50), and `The pottery' is noted by Ann Woodward (50).

A parish-by-parish survey of the building stones, the quarries from which they were derived, and significant buildings in which they were used. Extraction of iron ore is also mentioned. (See also 93/1423, 97/1239, 97/1241).

Considers the interpretation earthworks and building material visible in the vicinity of the villa (including a possible road and aqueduct source).

A solitary gravestone in unconsecrated ground still marks the site of the Meeting House of an eighteenth-century Quaker community. Local records are also referred to.
