Abstract
Le site acheuléen de la Grotte de Pontnewydd, Pays de Galles: géomorphologie, stratigraphie, chronologie, faune, hominidés fossiles, géologie et industrie lithique dans le contexte paléoécologique
Stephen H R Aldhouse-Green
et 10 al
15 - 52
A version of the work abstracted at 84/1253.
Les origines du 'Creswello-Hambourgien' The origins of 'Creswello-Hamburgian'
René Desbrosse
J K Kozlowski
183 - 188
Development and modification of authors' hypotheses on the origin of the first settlement in the NW Great European Plain after the Pleniglacial II. The Creswellian now appears as a relatively late extension of the Hamburgian westwards, possibly under some Late Magdalenian influence.
La tracéologie: mode d'emploi A methodology for microwear analysis
Hugues Plisson
Annelou Gijn, van
631 - 642
Defends the technique against some of its recent critics and urges that solutions to its various limitations be sought. Some directions for using microwear analysis are given.
Que peuvent vraiment nous révéler les études microscopiques des artéfacts lithiques? What can microscopic studies of stone artefacts really tell us?
Irene Lévi Sala
643 - 658
Discusses post-1976 research and the problems it has thrown up, including those of post-depositional processes. The importance of experimental work is stressed and the combination of various features - edge morphology, raw material characteristics, macro- and microscopic edge damage, polish development and distribution - is urged. Many illustrations of different polishes are provided.
Analyse expérimentale des microtraces d'usure: quelques controverses actuelles Experimental analysis of microwear traces: some current controversies
Romana Unger-Hamilton
659 - 672
Presents a hypothetical model for the way in which surface polish is formed, but finds many difficulties in the way of determining actual use of a tool. It is possible that concentrating on one tool type at a time, with full attention to all variables and with experimental work, might show a way forward.
Microtraces d'usure dues à la préhension Microwear traces of prehension
Linda R Owen
Günther Unrath
673 - 688
Experiments performed with sufficient attention to realism have found that traces of prehension can be quite extensive. Their form is affected by the nature of the grip (bare hands, leather, leaves, etc), the relief of the tool surface, the length of tool use, the amount of pressure applied, the raw material worked, and the amount of humidity, dirt, and grit present. Prehension microtraces can resemble those from working meat or skin, handling, or hafting. Au (abr)
