Abstract
Royal graves
Philip Crummy
1 - 5
Of the five enclosures discovered by aerial photography at Stanway gravel pit three were apparently built specifically for burials. Three burial chambers were located, each containing scatters of smashed, imported (and therefore expensive), pot and cremated human bone. There is evidence of timber structures and additional cremations and the complex is provisionally dated to between the end of the first century BC and the end of the first century AD. The site may help answer questions about the fate of the natives after the Roman settlement of Camulodunum. AR
St Botolph's Priory
Carl Crossan
Andrew Harris
Nina Crummy
6 - 10
Architectural and documentary evidence points to a completion date of 1177 for this Augustinian priory. The history and life of the order are summarised, along with a description of the priory's possible layout and its later history. Recent investigation of the previously unrecorded eastern part of the church revealed that most of the foundations had been robbed, but the basic layout was established and some earlier buildings identified. The discovery of a crypt suggests the priory had a relic (?St Botolph), although excavations were too limited to establish the chamber's full extent. AR
The return of `the mosaic of the wrestling cupids'
Philip Crummy
11 - 13
Describes the design and construction of this fine second century AD mosaic, now restored and displayed at Colchester Castle. Despite the skill with which it was created there are several faults in the border. The pavement was lifted in sections, glued to bandages, and reset by modern mosaicists. AR
Sweet-toothed wife-beaters?
Nina Crummy
19 - 20
Skeletons from the Butt Road cemetery showed evidence of a variety of congenital and acquired defects, including dental disorders and seven instances of intentional wounding, five inflicted on women. Bone lesions caused by bacterial infection were also present, one of which which may have been caused by tuberculosis. AR
