Abstract
Warrior burial
1 - 5
Details of the warrior burial at Stanway (see also 93/1058). Gravegoods included pottery, metal and glass vessels, glass gaming counters, brooches, textiles, wooden caskets/boxes, an armlet, spear, and a possible shield. The discovery of an inkwell in a nearby burial indicates literacy. There is some discussion of the possible use for the gaming counters, and the socio-political significance of warrior burials.
Chieftain's burial at St Albans
Rosalind Niblett
6 - 9
Details the rich warrior burial uncovered during the 1991--92 season. The accompanying gravegoods were exceptionally rich but had been damaged by the funeral pyre. Some examples survived, including bronze and gold vessels, horsegear (some of which was enamelled), and a complete chainmail tunic. As well as being a burial site, it is thought that it also served as a ritual focus.
Breathing new life into old bones
Rosemary Luff

Terry Cook
A tribute to the long-serving illustrator with Colchester Archaeological Trust who died suddenly in 1992.
