Abstract
The effect of the Conquest on Norman architectural patronage
Eric C Fernie
71 - 85
Examines first the 10th-early 12th century churches of Normandy, and then some English examples to determine the ways in which Anglo-Norman architecture either conforms to or departs from that tradition. Much use was made in England of Anglo-Saxon decorative elements, and diversity seems to have been embraced for its own sake. The patrons changed, but not the masons.
The Danish geometrical Viking fortresses and their context
Else Roesdahl
208 - 226
The four fortresses had a short life, perhaps under thirty years: they were very special, highly organized royal manors. Review of the likely builders points to Harald, making an attempt (unsuccessfully) to strengthen his control.
