Abstract
Life after death
Kit Martin
14 - 15
Discusses the `resurrection', or renovation, of historic houses in such a way as to retain their essential grandeur.
If not now, when?
16 - 17
Report on the current state and future of the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. The monument was covered and surrounded in scaffolding as a necessary preliminary to extensive conservation work in 1991, but that work has yet to begin. The elaborate and ornate construction of the memorial along with the original use of untested building techniques have contributed to its decay and to the prohibitive cost of repair. This case also raises the issue of financial support for the ongoing maintenance of such structures.
Stonehenge: your views
Brief report on findings, in the wake of public consultation, on the presentation of Stonehenge. Reports the results of a survey involving eight proposals for the site of the visitor centre being put before a wide cross-section of people.
Tread carefully and access scheme will benefit wall
Notes Countryside Commission plans to make Hadrian's Wall into a national trail. However, there is still some concern over the route across archaeologically sensitive stretches of the wall. Also notes its designation, during 1993, as a World Heritage Site.
Unique glass works blows hot
Reports the discovery of a unique Victorian tank furnace used in glass production in St Helens, Merseyside. The restored site will utilise interpretative displays and computerised models, and will open to the public by the end of 1994.
`Conserve and protect historic areas,' authorities advise
Reports new leaflet from EH entitled Conservation Area Practice, aimed at promoting the care and enhancement of Conservation Areas as well as highlighting the importance of care in their initial definition.
Developing conservation craft
Reports the opening of the first building conservation training centre at Fort Brockhurst in Gosport, Hampshire. The centre has the capacity to train 200 students each year and will employ `ruinettes' -- pseudo ancient stonework -- for them to practise on.
Windsor Castle: after the fire
Reports the completion of the salvage and recording stage, and the beginnings of monitoring the reconstruction.
A model for nonconformity
Michael Milliken
Reports the 1993 launch of the Historic Chapels Trust and discusses its importance.
A milestone in the care of Dartmoor sites
Reports the transfer of the LBA settlement at Grimspound, Houndtor medieval village and Merrivale prehistoric site to Dartmoor National Park Authority, under a ten year agreement.
Drawing up the battle lines
Report on the definition of a battlefield and EH's joining of forces with the National Army Museum to draw up a Battlefields Register.
Funding the heritage in a world of change
Brief résumé of the varied nature of built heritage that EH exists to preserve. Emphasises that ways of funding repair and maintenance need to be developed as most buildings and structures are not capable of being self funding and revenue for their maintenance is difficult to find.
Flour power at Sibsey Mill
Brief note on a windmill restored to working order last year. Also notes the recent restoration of a mill at Wilton.
New `Aladdin's cave' can be discovered at Kenwood
Reports four new displays of ceramics, jewellery, shoe buckles, and portrait miniatures at Kenwood, Hampstead, London.
Parterre par excellence
Reports the completion of the garden restoration project at Audley End, Essex.
