Abstract
A hundred years of archaeology in the Cardiff region, 1867-1967
Donald Moore
88 - 121
The centenary year of the Cardiff Naturalists Society is the occasion for a review of the growth of local archaeology within a twenty-mile radius of Cardiff. The fortunes of the Society in the 19th century are traced and some of its notable personalities like John Storrie discussed. In the period 1893-1948 Cardiff was fortunate enough to have, one after the other, three pioneers who made major contributions to archaeology in general - John Ward, R E M Wheeler and Cyril Fox. The National Museum's growth since it was chartered in 1907 is outlined, together with that of the Newport, Cyfarthfa Castle (Merthyr Tydfil) and Welsh Folk Museums. The work of the local academic and government institutions is described, and mention is made of the most notable contributions to each period of British archaeology made by scholars working in Wales.
