Abstract:
The first in a series planned to examine, by source, fabric and form, pottery from the major industries supplying the capital during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The study is based on Museum of London collections of early post medieval pottery made at a number of centres along the Surrey-Hampshire borders, which used common clay sources and shared forms and manufacturing techniques. A background to the Border ware industry gives a general chronology for the manufacture of the whitewares, redwares and `Tudor Green' wares, identifying production sites and clay sources and describing fabrics and glazes. The main body of the volume comprises a type-series with full descriptions and illustrations. Wares are described by class -- dishes and bowls, cooking and drinking vessels and `other forms' including candlesticks, money boxes and chamber pots -- and subdivided by form, giving details of manufacturing techniques. A discussion of the technological scope of the industry is followed by a chronological framework for the type-series, provided by data from excavated contexts, which also considers Border ware in relation to the other pottery sources supplying London during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The sources of the quantified pottery used in the post medieval series are described in `Appendix 1: the excavations' by David Lakin (103--11), giving brief site summaries and detailed descriptions of the quantified deposits. Julie Edwards provides `Summarised dating evidence' (non-ceramic) (112--19) for each site and context. `Appendix 2: concordance of illustrated vessels' (120--5) lists pottery by site code and context number or Museum of London accession number. Further sections are `Appendix 3: quantified data' (126--9) and `Appendix 4: thin-section analysis' (130).
