Abstract
Awkward Angles
Keith Nurse
3 - 4
A report on the Wasperton burial ground in Warwickshire that includes evidence from Pagan, Saxon, and Romano-British contexts. This suggests at least a certain amount of peaceful co-existence and two-way contact between Angles and Saxons. Of particular interest are the discovery of four gilded square-headed brooches dating from the sixth century and an unusual composite disc brooch covered in gold foil and set with blue glass dating from the seventh century. The former suggest contact between the district and the Upper Thames Valley.
The Birmingham coiners, 1770--1816
John Powell
49 - 55
Mainly historical account of late eighteenth and nineteenth century counterfeiting activities. Includes illustration of George III cartwheel penny fakes and token money created to compensate for a shortfall in Royal Mint production.
