Abstract
The redating of Ham Green Ware: some reflections in the Irish evidence
Caroline Sandes
1 - 4
Pottery from the Ham Green kiln site in Somerset was, until recently, thought to date from c 1120 and comparatively little Type A material has been found in Irish contexts although Type B is common. The Anglo-Norman invasions of Ireland occurred in 1169 and recent back-dating of Ham Green chronology by approximately 100 years on the strength of secure dendrochronological dates may explain the lack of Type A and even revise some medieval site dating.
The archaeology of chaos: similar problems in dissimilar disciplines
Stephen P Johnston
5 - 11
There are parallels between approaches to the problem of chaos in physics, and the problem of reading context-specific symbolic texts in archaeology. The realisation that complex and unpredictable phenomena can arise from relatively simple deterministic laws may have relevance for how archaeologists deal with symbolism.
Full doorstones in portal tombs, precluding successive burial
Edmond O'Donovan
12 - 18
A reappraisal of the significance of `blocking' in portal tombs, its relation to full doorstones, and cultural/chronological affinities to Linkardstown cist burials. There is a `Catalogue of portal tomb entrance features' (15--17) ordered by county.
Hagiography: a resource for the archaeologist
Teresa Bolger
22 - 25
A consideration of the archaeological relevance of lives of the saints, particularly with reference to the seventh century works Cogitosus' Life of St Brigit, Adomnán's Life of St Columba and the Patrician texts in the Book of Armagh.
The evidence for town walling at Athy, Co Kildare
Seamus Taaffe
26 - 31
An appraisal of historical evidence for a town wall where little of the archaeological variety exists. It is thought that walls were in place before 1568 and had been removed by 1756.
A `square earthen church of clay' in seventh-century Mayo
Cathy Swift
32 - 37
An assessment of the historical context of a reference to this church found in the Patrician lore of the Book of Armagh. Cautions against overly simplistic applications of medieval documentary evidence in the construction of archaeological models.
