Abstract
History revealed from bones
Robert E M Hedges
213

The winter solstice phenomenon at Newgrange, Ireland: accident or design?
T P Ray
343 - 345
From resurvey of the relevant features it is calculated that the roofbox of the passage grave was constructed so as to give a very narrow beam bisecting the chamber at first light on Midwinter's Day. Calculations by J Patrick and by D Heggie are corrected. The 14C date of 3150 + 100 cal BC is used to calculate the midwinter sunrise azimuth: at 1000 years earlier than Stonehenge III this would suggest Newgrange as the oldest megalithic structure of certain astronomical function.
