Abstract
New light on the Piltdown hoax?
Lambert B Halstead
11 - 13
In a tape recording made by J A Douglas, Professor of Geology at Oxford 1937-50, the perpetrator of the Piltdown forgery (or at least the person who supplied Charles Dawson with the materials) is suggested to have been Douglas' predecessor at Oxford, Professor Sollas. His motive is said to have been animosity against Smith Woodward and the desire to make a fool of him. Some fresh details are also given by Douglas about the fake Palaeolithic engraving known as the Sherborne Horse's Head, which Sollas knew was a forgery although he made no attempt to warn Smith Woodward about it at the time. [Oakley and Weiner repudiate this version of Piltdown - Ed].

Detection of 14C using a small van de Graaf accelerator
G Doucas
253 - 255
Presents data showing that measurements are possible using a much smaller and simpler system than those discussed previously. Still further refinements are proposed.
Enrichment of 14C and radiocarbon dating
Robert E M Hedges
C Bradley Moore
255 - 257
Summarizes the technical details of the process for laser enrichment of samples for radiocarbon dating - a process which is expected in due course to make a major contribution to extending the method much further back in time, and to allowing the use of much smaller samples than hitherto.
Historical climatology
M J Ingram
D J Underhill
T M L Wigley
329 - 334
Some recent climatological work has been marred by the uncritical use of documentary sources. Problems and pitfalls are identified and some firmer methodological foundations laid. See also 79/5794.
Evidence for domestication of the dog 12,000 years ago in the Natufian of Israel
Simon J M Davis
François Valla
608 - 610
A burial accompanied by a puppy (dog or wolfcub) in apparently affectionate relationship was found in a Natufian settlement at Mallaha and radiocarbon-dated to 10th millennium bc. Set alongside other canid material from the same area and period, and taken with other Epipalaeolithic evidence, the Natufian burial tends to confirm that there was a man-dog relationship a millennium or more before domestication of the food animals.
Identification of ancient heat treatment in flint artefacts by ESR spectroscopy
G V Robins
703 - 704
It is shown that the use of ESR (electron spin resonance) spectroscopy can provide a well defined method of assessing whether flint artefacts have been submitted to heat treatment to improve their flaking qualities. It is also hoped that the method can be developed to help in dating such artefacts.
