Abstract:
A study of the tombs, set against their Iron Age background, shows a remarkable continuity from the Iron Age to the 9th century AD; the rite was cremation, as in La Tène burials, and a few select gravegoods were deposited with a monument of some sort above ground. Only the technology of the gravegoods distinguishes a Roman period tomb from a Gaulish one, and throughout the dead had to be given due attention and offerings. Armorica remained a cultural backwater for much of the Roman period, but a marked change (brought about by troubles to the east?) in 4th century saw increased richness of tombs, though the lower classes kept on their old ways. If Germans and Britons were arriving in later 4th century, the extent of their influence on funerary customs is not clear.
