The juxtaposition of prehistoric and early medieval monuments seen at Yeavering, Sutton Hoo, and in the Boyne Valley has less to do with continuity of ritual significance than with attempts by a social elite to legitimize their position through reference to the past. Similar considerations would apply to Forteviot (henges and Pictish palace), Thwing (henge, Late Bronze Age ringwork, and 8th century AD high status cemetery), and Tara.

Walls exposed in earlier excavations, and thought to be Saxon, seem to be part of an abandoned Roman complex re-occupied in 7th century by a double monastery. The plan of the Romanesque church is revised, contra Jackson and Fletcher. Sculptural evidence, radiocarbon determinations from burials, and documentary sources suggest that it is post-Conquest. The tower was demolished in 1822 but drawings and prints from c 1615 onwards allow a detailed reconstruction. It is suggested that the construction of the W towers and façade, usually dated as late as 1120-30, is contemporary with the W bays of the nave, c 1100. The chevron ornament in the tower's lower stages is therefore earlier than the use of the motif at Durham cathedral c 1110. F B
