Abstract: |
The research sample so far excavated suggests a remarkable contrast between the area with burial mounds and that on the eastern extremity with its crowded and diverse burials; two explanatory models are being considered. J Newman reports on the SE Suffolk pilot field survey in the East Anglia Kingdom project, with distribution maps by period (prehistoric to Late Saxon/medieval). At Snape, W Filmer-Sankey reports work in 1986 which investigated the limits, state of preservation, and character of the cemetery. Preservation varies from good to destroyed, with sand-blow erosion and ploughing continuing; mixed inhumation/cremation was the rite. Back at Sutton Hoo, technical work on detecting organic residues, on 'sandman' moulding, and remote plotting and 3-dimensional graphics is in progress. |
