Abstract
Martham in the thirteenth century: Presidential Address to the Norfolk Archaeological and Historical Research Group, 24 April 1993
Barbara Cornford
5 - 14
A study of landholdings based on an unusually detailed survey of the manor of Martham carried out in 1292 for the Prior of Norwich Cathedral Priory.
Trade and industry in the Saxo-Norman period
Brian S Ayers
15 - 17
Examines evidence, derived predominantly from towns throughout England, for economic development and commerce from Anglo-Saxon times to the thirteenth century. Coinage, place-names, and artefactual evidence are cited to illustrate the establishment of craft centres and expansion of local, regional, national, and international trading links. The growth of towns and ports is also considered.
Norman castles
Andrew Rogerson
17 - 20
A general archaeological and historical survey of early castles in Norfolk, some of which reused earlier earthworks.
The origin and distribution of freemen and sokemen
Tom Williamson
20 - 22
The difference in status between the two groups of `free peasants' is examined with reference to historical (Domesday) and place-name evidence.
27 King Street, King's Lynn -- architecture and families
Elizabeth James
23 - 38
An architectural study of the Grade II* listed riverside `merchant's' house -- the town's finest -- which exhibits several phases of building from the possibly pre-1700 to the nineteenth century. The study is augmented by documentary evidence relating to the families who occupied the premises over two hundred years. One appendix discusses `The party wall with 25 King Street' (36-7 & 39), and another presents the `Flierden (Van Vlierden) and Vinckesteyn family tree' (38).
Shouldham: agricultural organization in the 1630s
Mike Medlar
38 - 51
A study of land use and settlement pattern in Shouldham Manor, based on a 1663 estate survey and other sources from the Hare Collection. An appendix tabulates `Land holding in Shouldham 1633' (50).
