Abstract
Early building found under the amphitheatre
Keith Matthews
1
Excavations within the Roman amphitheatre in Chester revealed a previously unknown early building, probably dating from the 70s AD, and the remains of a third-century staircase leading up to the seating bank of the amphitheatre. There were indications that substantial parts of the amphitheatre remained standing until the seventeenth century. A Roman intaglio depicting a soldier with trophy armour is also described.
Up the river to Heronbridge
D J P Mason
2
Excavations at a site at Heronbridge previously excavated forty years ago revealed a quay thought to date to about 130 AD, and three later rock-cut tombs. Investigations of the post-Roman defensive enclosure indicated that it was open along its river frontage and was considerably earlier in date than c. 1250 AD, and may have been from the Viking era.
