1
An excavation behind shops on Bridge Street Row and Eastgate Street Row in Chester has revealed a large quantity and range of artefacts from the Romano-British through to the post-medieval period, including the leg bone of an elephant, a sixteenth-century `jack-of-plate' reinforced doublet and a Roman antefix.

Topsoil stripping in advance of gas pipeline construction between Birch Heath and Mickle Trafford revealed an Early Iron Age settlement of at least six structures, a boundary ditch and other features, plus a Romano-British settlement consisting of at least three possible round houses plus a number of ditches and evidence of iron working. The pottery from the Iron Age site included parts of specialised vessels used for salt production, while that of the Romano-British site included cheese presses.
