Abstract:
Reports on the long-running excavations. It is revealed that the known Late Saxon abbey church was pre-dated by two phases of earlier Saxon burials and chalk foundations, probably associated with an abbey church of early tenth-century date. Investigation of the north and south transepts of the Late Saxon stone church uncovered several contemporary graves, including eight charcoal burials. The structural development of the Norman and later abbey was also illuminated, especially in relation to the double eastern chapels and the fifteenth-century addition of a parish aisle. Limited excavation of the claustral and domestic precinct is also reported. Finally, evidence for the destruction associated with the Dissolution is discussed. The first of three chapters on finds covers miscellaneous artefacts: pottery; architectural and sculptural stone; medieval window glass; `The glass from the 1988 excavations, an assessment' by Jan Summerfield & J Brian Kerr (115); Roman brick and tile; animal bone; debris from copper alloy working `An examination of metallurgical debris from Romsey Abbey' by Paul Budd (119). A chapter devoted to the medieval floor tiles includes: an `Introduction to the reports' by Paul Spoerry & Ian R Scott (121--2); `The report on the medieval floor tiles from Romsey Abbey (from excavations to 1979' by A D Russel (122--42); and `A note on the decorated floor tiles recovered from excavations conducted from 1980 onwards' by Paul Spoerry (142--4). The chapter on human remains comprises `The skeletal remains from excavations at Romsey Abbey 1973--1979, and at the United Reformed Church 1989' by Christine Osborne (145--56). A `Description of the archives of the abbey excavations and post-excavation procedures' in given in an appendix (159--62).
