Abstract
A house-shaped Irish-Scots reliquary in Bologna, and its place among the other reliquaries
Martin Blindheim
1 - 53
The 'new' discovery is discussed in the context of the other eight and of the artistic and technical milieu (eg crosses, brooches) of their production. The Bologna, Ranvaik (Norway), and Monymusk examples are all assigned to Pictish work of 9th century. Were some taken abroad by Pictish - or Irish - monks?
Vendel Period glass from Eketorp-II, Öland, Sweden. On glass and trade from the late 6th to the late 8th centuries AD
Ulf Nasman
55 - 116
Identifies four phases of glass exchange: AD 1-400, reciprocal luxury gifts; then involvement of chieftains' seats; by Later Vendel and early Viking, inclusion of basic commodities, and emporia (Hedeby etc); Classic Viking, luxury exchanges, raids, and more developed market exchange. Distribution of glass is compared with that of sceattas, lava querns, etc; military and marriage links were probably important.
